Welcome to Black Hills Friesians.  We are a small family ranch located in the shadow of the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.  Our primary mission is happy and healthy horses and the promotion of the Friesian breed.

There is nothing quite like the majestic, noble and versatile Friesian horse.  As a small ranch, we occasionally have a foal or two for sale, with an emphasis on quality, good character, strong conformation and sportability.

Friesian Horses

The Friesian originated in Friesland, (the Netherlands).  Although the conformation of the breed resembles that of a light draft, Friesians are graceful and nimble for their size.  Friesians were used during the Middle Ages as war horses throughout continental Europe.  Their size enabled them to carry an armored knight yet still be agile. 

Though the breed nearly became extinct on more than one occasion, the modern day Friesian is growing in numbers and popularity.  Friesians are used both as driving and riding horses and are becoming popular in Dressage.  The Friesian  is a versatile horse and can succeed in any discipline.
